Kitchen is where the Hearth is

Cooking at Yoga Farm is the most fun I have had in any kitchen. We use as many ingredients directly from the farm as possible. Root vegetables, fresh ginger, starfruit and peppers graced almost every meal. As long as hot sauce was on the table, everybody was happy. Volunteers and sometimes guests help prepare the evening meal in two hour sessions. This picture shows my room-mate and fellow volunteer, Aida and Sarah (skirt in the background). An atmosphere of warmth…

Yoga on the beach

This morning we did a photo session after yoga class. It was awesome. The other girls here are Niki, Erika (a phenomenal yoga teacher) and Sarah. Sarah’s boyfriend Marek is the photographer. He’s a professional and we are lucky to have them staying at Yoga Farm with us. Waking up at dawn, morning yoga classes, Erika is teaching some really cool warrior sequences that I will learn. We dedicated classes each day to each of the chakras last week, finishing…

Beaches by bike

From Punta Banco to Pavones, it’s a long ride to internet and the store from which you can buy batteries or get money. Best to get off and take a swim a few times on the way back. Still making the best of the trip. Teaching a few times per week and working at Yoga Farm with gardening, harvesting and cooking. Getting ready to leave soon though!

Bike trip to Pavones

Today is my 5th day here at yoga farm and my 15th day in Costa Rica. I have been gone from the states for two weeks now and it feels like forever! Yesterday I took a trip to Pavones because it’s the only place I can get cash and buy tea or chocolate. Setting off in the morning, I biked about 8 km to Pavones for internet and a few basic necessities. It took about 30 minutes or so to…

Yoga Farm life

Already I have fallen into a pattern, getting up at first light, down to the kitchen for coffee and writing in my notebook. Keeping a journal of everything that comes up during this meditative stay. Yoga is at 6:30 every morning. Working in the garden or some other volunteer project in mid-morning and then lunch and a tiny siesta or heading to the beach. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons we have yoga at 3:15 in the afternoon as well. The yoga…

Monkeys at the beach

White faced monkeys at Manuel Antonio beach early morning yoga session. Capuchin Monkeys in the trees nearby were a great distraction before the early morning yoga class on the beach. This troop was active and protective of its young. Cappuchin Monkeys on the beach, Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica from kamala rose on Vimeo.

Yoga at Manuel Antonio beach

Monkey business in the trees nearby kept us distracted for a while before we started our yoga class, but the white faced monkey family we met was fascinating. Here’s a video of the little guys climbing in the trees nearby. Capuchin monkeys are friendly and plentiful in Costa Rica. Definitely the best place to try inversions on the soft sand. I led a multi-level class through vinyasas and we had a great time playing around at Manuel Antonio beach Thursday…

Chasing the Grail

It occurred to me in sivasanah yesterday that I came back here to attend things that were never quite finished years ago, and now have been given all new directions. The vision I had was of a horse and rider, on a beach. He threw at me a white orb. It was my dream as well, last night. It must have been a snowball. I woke this morning to snow, falling, making everything clean and fresh, feeling good again. I…

Seaside Lotus

Krishnamurti, teacher of many things, I am studying this, and many philosophies.  Its easy to see why so many great thinkers came from Italy, it is the natural progression of the human to wonder why we are given the beauty of this place… It is possible to disconnect from the trap of the rat race and be introspective, here between the sea and the mountains, far from everything I know- even the English language.  The distance from here is enough…

Velentine’s abroad 2007 still ick

Just another Tuesday in February, the dark of winter as I can easily be drawn into morbid moments of self pity.  Walking ancient cobblestoned streets, listening to echoes of Slavic conversation riochet down the narrow streets through old town square on my way to lotus, buddhist centrum on Dlhoua Street.  The yoga helped. The job is coming and the money not far behind, just a few more weeks of teaching English. Last week I had my final meeting at Strom,…
